Fantaw joined OIC International in 2000 soon after it opened its office in Ethiopia and has been serving as the Country Representative of OIC International in Ethiopia since 2001.
He has been instrumental in securing funding and successfully implementing two major programs in Ethiopia. One program, Innovative Adolescent Reproductive Health Education Integrated with Skills Training, is a 3-year program funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and began in 2001. Since 2001, it has completed three 3-year phases, and is currently beginning its fourth phase.
Fantaw also assists OIC International’s local affiliate, OIC-Ethiopia, in collaborative implementation of programs and in securing external funding. Notable among these are a 50,000 Euros grant from a German church-based PVO and a 200,000 Euros grant from the German Government, which has been used to construct new educational facilities for OIC-Ethiopia.
Fantaw received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and his doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He served with the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia as a veterinarian from 1970 to 1983 and then joined the Development Bank of Ethiopia where he served as the Manager of its Agriculture Department till 2000.
